book va work

My voice work journey began as a mission to make my second novel, Fault Lines, accessible to my father, whose illness had rendered him legally blind. When Hachette Audio announced they were producing an audio version of Fault Lines, I’d already established a relationship with a local state of the art production studio. Because the studio was on a college campus, any work I brought them would provide their sound engineering students real world experience as they assisted their professors in production. It was a win for everyone.

I no longer needed the studio time for Fault Lines, so I used it instead to record another author’s book, a friend whose publisher wasn’t planning an audio audition. The author loved the result, and I loved the work. Word spread, and soon other authors approached me with projects. I’ve recorded memoir, fiction, nonfiction, and a seven-part audio mystery series. Currently, I have ten audio books in the pipeline. If you’d like to connect about my possibly recording for you, please email noracarpenterwrites@gmail.com with the subject title AUDIO INQUIRY.

In a picturesque New England town, three amateur sleuths—a former investigative journalist-turned-dog walker, an enterprising tour guide, and a passionate wildlife biologist—team up to solve ecological mysteries and wildlife crimes, using the Rambling Roads Walking Tours company as their base of operations.

Rambling Roads Mysteries blends the cozy intrigue of Mistletoe Murders with the amateur sleuthing dynamic of Only Murders in the Building, set against the backdrop of small-town conservation work. Like Alaska Daily, it features a journalist-turned-investigator uncovering systemic issues, but with a lighter, character-driven tone. Think True Detective meets The Durrells in Corfu—where environmental crimes and historical mysteries collide with the charm and eccentricity of a New England town. With shades of Veronica Mars in its sharp-witted, determined sleuth and a Three Pines-like setting full of secrets, the series offers a fresh take on small-town mystery storytelling.

More Questions

How do you balance writing with voice acting?

That’s a great question! They’re very different types of creativity, as one is purely generative, while voice acting involves breathing energy into characters already created. It still involves a lot of emotional output, but in a different way. I find the two complement one another pretty well. If I’m stuck on a writing project, for example, I can still find a creative outlet in voice acting. Immersing myself in someone else’s world for a while gives me some distance from my own work so that I can approach it again with fresh eyes.

How do authors or publishers contact you about voice work?

If you’d like to connect about my possibly recording for you, please email noracarpenterwrites@gmail.com with the subject title AUDIO INQUIRY. Currently, I have ten audio books in the pipeline, so I’m booked fairly far out.

Do you have a theatre background?

I do, at a community level. My voice work journey began as a mission to make my second novel, Fault Lines, accessible to my late father, whose illness had rendered him legally blind. When Hachette Audio announced they were producing an audio version of Fault Lines, I’d already established a relationship with a local state of the art production studio. Because the studio was on a college campus, any work I brought them would provide their sound engineering students real world experience as they assisted their professors in production. It was a win for everyone. I no longer needed the studio time for Fault Lines, so I used it instead to record another author’s book of essays, a friend whose publisher wasn’t planning an audio audition. The author loved the result, and I loved the work. Soon other authors approached me with projects, and it’s grown from there. I love making art accessible to everyone.

What was your most recent project before that?

I recently finished recording a seven-part audio mysteries by Diana Renn called Rambling Roads Mysteries, in which I voice main character and dog walker-turned amateur sleuth Evelyn Carlisle. I had an absolute blast, not just because the story is enjoyable, but the series features a cast ensemble. That means I got to record in studio with eleven other voice actors, some of whom I’d done theatre shows with previously and a few others who became new friends. It was pure joy to work with such a talented and fun bunch. The series is currently being mixed and engineered, but I believe it will be available in the middle of 2026. We actors are already excited about season 2!

What’s your voice acting current project?

I’m currently recording Black Mirror, a thriller written by New York Times bestselling author and Edgar Award winner, Nancy Werlin. It’s the first book of Nancy I’m voicing, but not the last! I’m so excited to be involved in a number of her audiobooks.
